This is the discussion thread that one can use to send the message to the Breakfast Club children at WE center Gulu. I will also make the children to use this work space for posting their life experience in Northern Uganda war and the impact on them.

Please feel free to share with me, the Breakfast Club children and other Lia members on this thread.

Hey Robert, please be aware of the following clause in the Omidyar.net user agreement:

The Services are intended for individuals 18 years of age or older. By using, accessing or registering for the Services, you represent and warrant that you are at least 18 years of age. If you are not at least 18 years of age or do not agree with the terms of this Agreement, do not use, view, access or register for the Services.

It's a great idea to post messages from the kids, but maybe you could think about posting them (or have other users in Gulu post them) instead of having the kids sign up themselves.

Perhaps what you could do is interview the children and post summaries of those interviews as a work around?

Thanks a lot Robert for the wonderful thought. This is a good and one of the ways we can retain our connection with those children.

Please communicate my most humble regards and encouragements to these gentlemen:

  • Odida Peter
  • Okello Thommy
  • Ojara Abel, and
  • Okello Geoffrey

I am still holding to some text books that I desire to send to Peter. I might send them to LiA Kampala via one of the Kenyans residing in Kampala. Probably some day I could also find my way to seeing them.

Thanks Robert and "Honey" for keeping this thread moving. Those photos are wonderful; they bring back to me the recollections of Gulu. I am ecstatic at the notion of reunion with the children later this month.

Christina had asked me to make a detailed report of the Breakfast club.

I have talked to Robert about the Breakfast Club and how it is working. I have developed a budget for the meals of 100 children. Robert and I met to be sure everything was included. They serve two meals alternating the days of the week. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday they serve tea and bread. On Tuesday and Thursday they serve milk and Kasava.

Tea days Milk days

Tea leaf- 50 Shillings Milk- 300 Shillings Charcole- 200 Shillings Kasava- 100 Shillings Cup of Tea- 100 shillings Bread- 100 shillings Milk Kasava= 400shilling/ child

x100=40000
Tea and bread= 450 shillings/child
x100= 45000

These are the prices of 100 children to feed in a month. There has been a problem of the breakfast club money going towards other activites such as loans work. The Breakfast Club money should be seperate from other funds. Because money was taken for other activities extra money is needed to keep the breakfast club working properly.

Extra Money for New Things: • Emergency in case a child is sick and needs to go to the hospital. They would need money for bodaboda rides. Robert had said the limit would be 3000 Shillings. The cost over 3000 could be paid by the parents. 20,000 shillings/month

• There is also a worry of diseases from the water. Robert would like to buy a 50L big pot, one for girls area and one for boys area. It would be like a water fountain. The cost being a one time 20,000 Shillings.

• The water would be bought every week. They would buy 5 containers a week at 100 shillings/ container and for a month would cost 2000 shillings/month.

• Another concern is First Aid. They need one First Aid Kit that they could keep stocked.

• The drums have holes in them and cannot be played. They could be repaired for 50,000 shillings.

• There is also a need for batteries for flashlights. There are two flashlights. They need 6 pair/ month and a pair is 800 shillings. That would cost 2400 shillings/month. These flashlights are used by staff during the night and very early to cook breakfast.

• There is a need also for an alarm clock for the matron. She would be able to set a time to wake and begin breakfast. Cost: 5000 Shillings.

• Also another concern is to double the amount of bread so the children may have seconds. 70% of the children have asked for seconds. Bread is only 1000 shillings/100 children, that would raise it to 2000 shillings

The total of all these extra costs would be 101,400 shillings. The estimated money taken from the Breakfast Club budget 136,000 Shillings. So the problem is not there is not enough money but the money is gone to other things before it is used for the Breakfast club. The Breakfast Club money should be set apart from other funds and used on the children.

The other question was are all the children being fed, even the ones who sleep at home?

Answer: Yes the center keeps track of all the children and they come for activities and breakfast. Their parents come to the center for activities also. The parents give messages to the children about activities.

Everyone here is fine and doing well. The matron does two jobs. She needs a salary increase. I guess that is under the Breakfast Club fund. This is what is needed to make sure the Breakfast club runs properly.

Sincerely,

Kevin
