:Title: Assignment: What's up on Omidyar.net :Author: James Davis (CCAL30) :Date: Tue, 22 May 2007 22:57:42 PDT :URL: http://www.omidyar.net/group/cmps80j/news/61/ This discussion is part of the course CMPS80J at UCSC. Go find out what projects exist on omidyar.net outside the class that sound like they fit the criteria for a project within the class. That is social+tech+money, the same as the social business proposals I'm asking from you. That is, what are other people doing? Go find out and report back in this thread in a concise way (since I acknowledge that o.net is vast and no one could read all of it). This assignment was inspired by a email comment from an o.net member. Since I wasn't given explicit permission to share I withheld the authors name. I doubt they care, but still: ------ Off the cuff - I have observed that your students have not really engaged much in dialogue with the community here who has tried to engage. It seems clear that they are doing what they need to do (ie making a post that says x, y and z) but only a few of them are actually taking note of what others say and learning from each other/us in conversation. Next time you might think about strengthening some of the assignments by having them find the living examples of IT for social change that exist - within this community and others (have you heard of net squared?) and discuss the reading assignments against those examples. ie, something like *find a project on Onet that you think illustrates a Bottom of the Pyramid strategy and start a discussion about your observations. Invite the Onet members involved in that project to discuss with you*
