As you may know, those of us who are in our 25th year of tracking networks and sustainability reckon we have 5 years left to start turning this round- so we are escalating collaboration tools that work and dumping those that don't

Facebook is certainly a space through which huge collaborations can be achieved when info is known to be life-critical - as eg its prominence during virginia teach tragedy witnessed

but how's it work

one cool feature is that the internal email let's you send and reply to messages of up to 20 people in a group not just one; however the only people you can do this with are those who have mutually agreed colaborations so this brings down risks of abuse of such a freedom to sensible proportions

better yet is that the internal email encourages you to share videos - all you need is the bookmark where the video is and on receipt of email the veiwer will be one click away

since one of my current pursitys is to search out transparency most vital knowhow videos that are on the net and get them to people who need that knowhow, this feature is an all or nothing dealmaker for why I love facebook

in the event that this is an empowerment cooperation use of the net that you too make why not join http://www.facebook.com ; search for chris macrae (the elder one) and friend me; then we can start clubbing where people already work on this collaboration pursuit

http://blog.wired.com/monkeybite s/2007/05/facebook_become.html Social networking site Facebook has just opened up its doors to the web's million-plus web application programmers.

At a San Francisco launch event Thursday, the company debuted its new application framework that lets outside developers write programs to run on Facebook's website. The company promises that third-party applications will be "treated with parity," meaning that Facebook will place minimal restrictions on development. Facebook will also let developers access its community-generated data, from News Feeds and photos to shopping wish-lists and local event information.

This goes beyond simple widgets like those on MySpace -- instead of just letting a user interact with another web service, these applications will let users interact with outside services as well as the Facebook community. It marks the transformation of Facebook from a social networking website into a broad platform that approaches an operating system's flexibility. Applications can be embedded in pages, users can pick and choose what they want to run on their profiles. As a result, everyone's Facebook experience will be as customizable as their computer's desktop.

what is cool about facebook is that they've just released the latest version of Facebook Platform, their API that enables developers to create custom applications to interact with data within the Facebook social environment. This opens up lots of new potential for ad creation and more effective cause marketing/campaigning among Facebook members. It'll be interesting to see how well Barack performs among Facebook users relative to other candidates.

you know meron it would be interesting to know what vested interest came up with that link you sent us to

for heaven sake - all media can be abused and abused; if I were to start a web http://worldclassbrands.tv on the way that mass media has put all of our species at extinction risk with its untruths

for sure do not use facebook if you have nothing your are trying to innovate nor peer to peer learn; it would be far safer not to use any media if you have no life goals of that sort

do you know who came up your link's appaling scare tactic vis a vis facebook - sounds like it had a mass media sponsor somewhere

I take it you are familiar with the Causes application which is a general cause marketing/campaigning tool created by third-party developers using the Facebook API.

There are a handful of Omidyar Network groups, causes and changes now on Facebook!

  • Look for the iACT CAUSE and help support Stop Genocide Now
  • AMO Cause: LOVE is now up and running, new actions every week!
  • There are groups for Atlas Service Corps, Omidyar.net participants, AMO and many genocide awareness groups along with discussions on sustainability, poverty, activism.....

I've seen maybe 15 people from this network on Facebook so far? Anyone want to encourage this community to at least have some reflection there? I'm not in love with certain aspects to the platform but it's a useful tool for awareness and outreach beyond our ONet circles.

I have been looking at how facebook might meet needs of this community.

  1. I believe it could be possible to set up a network that could be used.
  2. Inside the network there is ability to form groups.
  3. The groups have the ability to hold discussions.
  4. Polling is available.
  5. Chatting and messaging is available.
  6. It is possible to post images and video.
  7. Fund raising tools are available.

There is no reputation engine, there is no wiki. The lack of a wiki is critical for joint building of projects but there could be the option of getting someone to write a wiki application????

We have a group omidyar.net on facebook with at least 23 people from here that I have been able to confirm. There are in fact 36 members in the group. I know that there are other at least 9 other onet people there who are not members of the omidyar.net group

Nice work Linda!

I read that Facebook is discouraging the use of regular group messages and would like to keep chatter there to a minimum (or in comment feeds and walls, not emailed messages). Some groups seem to be migrating to Ning to fill the gaps.
