I don't like the title of the popular series of books "For Dummies" but I've got to admit the books are useful for a guy like me. Thinking of the transition from Omidyar.net I'm looking for and joining other platforms. The trouble is I've got so much to learn about how to use them. The idea of this thread is for questions and tips on using the new platforms that we maybe encountering in this transition.

Facebook is one platform that's new to me. I would like to learn to use facebook more effectively.

Something I found useful is a facebook widget for Netvibes I had signed up for Netvibes a while back and never really learned to use it. But now I'm trying to keep track of various new Web sites and I find that it's a pretty useful page. Using Netvibes with the facebook widget I can see activity there as well as what's happening at gmail, de.li.cious, flickr and other sites all on one page.

I'd be glad to hear suggestions about using facebook and Netvibes more effectively.

Tribe.net offers a useful tool set. In addition maybe some of you are already active there. I started a tribe Omidyar.net Alums http://tribes.tribe.net/omidyara lums Please join if it's of any interest.

I started a similar group to the one at trib.net at Razoo http://beta.razoo.com/groups/omi dyar_alum

It seems to me a good thing that there be multiple ways for people who've used Omidyar.net to connect with others into the future.

So if you're active at a site where other Onetters may be or might be gathering, please consider starting a group or a page there where people may establish contact.

It's so ridiculous for me to talk about Web sites because chances are I don't really "get" it. But in trying to figure out facebook, I have been trying to figure out Netvibes. It seems to me that a combination of the two is more powerful than they are stand alone.

Facebook excels in the community aspect whereas Netvibes excels in the ability to bring together tools. One of the great features of Netvibes is being able to create tabs which can then be shared. Thus it is possible for users to subscribe to a tab and have all the work at different places displayed in one place. So for example there might be google docs there as well as relevant blog updates. If you're permitted to make changes to the google doc you can do so, or leave comments on blogs, all while having the page of collected information in front of you.

I'm probably missing something. I noticed that one of the tabs at netvibes for subscription was by none other than Harry Lime so I know that I'm not the only one looking at Netvibes. Alas, I don't see a way to aggregate the Omidyar.net users of Netvibes. Is there a way to do that?

One thing I missed was by putting the discussion threads in a Tab at Netvibes the facebook login feature closed the window and ported me to facebook. So I guess tbs in Netvibes won't work like I thought.

At Network Weavers they are exploring Mashable.com which seems to me similar to Netvibes. Here's the discussion.
