Daniel Pearl was the Wall Street Journal reporter who was murdered by terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan, in early 2002. Instead of leading to more hate, his family in the Daniel Pearl Foundation is dedicated to projects that increase tolerance and understanding.

Part of this is the Daniel Pearl music days. Daniel Pearl Music Days uses the power of music to promote cross-cultural understanding and reaffirm our commitment to humanity. Anyone can participate by dedicating a pre-scheduled musical concert or a song, or by organizing a special event, as part of Daniel Pearl Music Days with a statement from the stage or in the written program in support of tolerance and "harmony for humanity." from October 1-10, 2005....

  • musicians can dedicate a song or concert,
  • a DJ can dedicate a radio show;
  • an orchestra can dedicate a concert, a single composition, or an open rehearsal;
  • a youth group can perform in a school auditorium or at a sports half-time event;
  • a band of musicians or solo artist can perform at a local nightclub, coffeehouse, school or community center;
For concerts and the Internet concert/broadcast that is running in October, see
http://www.music-days.org

I have no personal connection to this (other than that Daniel's father, Judea Pearl is a famous computer scientist, so I've met him briefly). I'm just humbled and awed by a family that can take so much hate and still try to do something productive with it. I don't know if I would have been that strong.

"A Mighty Heart" the movie staring Angelina Jolie as Marianne Pearl, Dan Pearl's wife, is opening in movie theaters tomorrow. I'd be interested to hear what people think of the film. So: if you go see it, please post your reactions.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie. I loved Mariane Pearl's book. Saw her and Angelina Jolie on Charlie Rose yesterday. Both very strong, level-headed women doing great work in this world. It's extraordinary how she had handled this whole thing.

Danny used to live in Atlanta. After he had been kidnapped and before we knew what had happened I ran into an old friend who knew him. They played in the same band and she was distraught. She said he was the greatest guy. I think she said he played the violin. Wish I could remember the name of the band. I remember that it was hilarious. Oh, wait, I know. It was called The Ottoman Empire.

Amnesty International is asking that everybody try to get out to see this movie this weekend so that the numbers will be high and that will help with getting the wonderful message behind this movie out to the public. Thanks for starting this thread, Lenore.
