Conference Overview

At Omidyar.net, we believe every individual has the power to make a difference. We exist for one single purpose: So that more and more people discover their own power to make good things happen.

Globalizing Local Change Through Online Communities is an Omidyar.net Community conference convened in East Africa for the purpose of uplifting, discussing and collaborating on local and global issues that you feel passionate about.

If you are involved in supporting, building or running a community based project to improve the well being of people in Africa, participating in this global community learning event will connect you with others from around the world who share your passions, and who want to find ways to work with you to make the world we all live in a better place to be.

The conference convenes in Northern Uganda - one of Africa's longest troubled regions. Our purpose is to connect collaborative hearts and minds who are ready to learn what it's going to take to create lasting and meaningful change in today's world, from the grassroots up. Among the passions we bring to the event are:

  • Uplifting disadvantaged children through creative arts and peace-building activities
  • Living positively with HIV/AIDS, Sickle Cell, and other personal health challenges
  • Eradicating Waterborne Diarrheal Illnesses
  • Innovative ideas for local income generating projects
  • Using online tools to connect African community voices to the world of global changemakers online
  • Cost effective community connectivity solutions
  • New models for sustainable community living
  • Addressing the impact of trauma in the community
  • Networked Enterprise Development <ned>
  • The gifts and challenges of sufficiency development
  • The connection between personal and social change
  • add your passion here...

The agenda of this Open Space event is yours to set, together with participants from Gulu, East Africa and around the world once the conference begins. In addition to learning much about whatever your passions are, we will also learn about using online community tools to continue to build the many ideas and relationships we will forge while we are there.

The sky is the limit on what we will discover from each other in this real-time face to face setting about how to make change happen in the world today. We hope you will join us in Gulu.
