The MOVIE & MUSIC COTTAGE INDUSTRY is an effort to create conditions for a renaissance similar to that of Florencia in Italia in the 16th Century. Taxco is already world-famous for its silversmithing; the near-by villages are populated with skilled artisans. Taxco is a center for theater, the city is named for a famous dramatist, Juan Ruiz del Alarcon. Then, there is the music tradition of southern Mexico and of Guerrero in particular with its narrative verses and intelligent melodies and the regional tradition of folkloric dancing.
This project is based upon romantic love novelas
with Mexican village girls as the leading ladies
these works were written over years in a series
of language learning exercises and adapting them,
not only to digital scene-a-day e-mail presentation,
yet also filming them, in an independent production.
They go hand in hand - the movies - the jewelry - the music
give away a song as a thank you for a payment
give a way an illusion as a freebie as part of a subscription package
This is a prototype we are offering to all 3W village based artisan producers.
All the different village producer communitites can make music and make movies that provide a way for them to break out of the cage of being marginalized to the point where nobody even knows you exist.
Part of this project is to produce a practical manual in spanish
(both printed, and on-line with audio video instruction modules)
Once it has been done successfully, then another group can do it too.
The Music & Movie Cottage Industry generates jobs where people can
live their natural lives - there is tremendous talent in our Taxco.
The veteran artists are critical. By the time these guys are sixty
there is no question as to the quality the veterans have much to offer
very much to give to this kind of project working with young people -
good young people of our city, who like to connect to their heritage.
In sum, we are in position to pull together eclectic media production
Q4 proceeds will be applied to paying veteran artists
for their services in making the movie sample-scenes.
These veterans i mention include acting coaches and dancing coaches.
Also we are paying the musicians, when they are the older generation.
Additionally to pay for hardware and software for video and for audio,
props, transportation, paying small amounts to actors, extras...
to pay the camerorographers, for batteries, for a cast picnic
the day the musical dance scenes 51 and 52 are enacted and filmed.
The disbursements to be displayed by contadoras campesinas on internet

yaaaa!!! yesssss!!! i think this is great martin! ya'll are so well organized, and this hits home with women who have been displaced by the fast changing techno-world.
it is so hard for women to find a place in modern economy, and by sticking together, these women have fought to make a difference in thier homes, villages, and culture.
how refreshing to see ANYONE with the guts to take a stand on thier culture and work, involving it together as these ladies have done...and they are going to make it work i think. they need some outside support to encourage them and keep em going!
this is the best project i have seen so far, and i sure hope it grows in support...it involves grassroots organizers, women, workplaces, families, children, improving home and village life, hospitals, libraries, and so much more!
thanks martin, for your great suggestion!

WOW Macedonian love scenes?! sounds like worth trying.
In this globalized mess, might as well peddle romance?¿
women can produce their own stories, to get an audience;
then, market to that audience, ....their village products.

I was told that OHASA, a 501c registered in Ohio would respond
and that that should be no problem. However, it appears there
may be a little problem as the officer who signs the approval
is out of town. It is impossible to signal urgency to them
becasue they are offering a favor, we can not hurry them up.
OHASA's constitutional mission has something to do with the
well being of the illegal mexicans in greater columbus ohio.
Guerrero is one of the 36 Mexican states with the highest
percentage of population in the United States. I think it
is more than 50 percent of the men of Guerrero are up there.
Since all the people here have relatives there, isnt it seemly
that OHASA sponsor a culural and artistic project of artcamp
rural womens artisans cooperativa of tecalpulco, guerrero?

today have been learning about mixers and sound boards and
microphones and condensers and consoles and audio software
Tomas Beltran and gregorio Estrada and other veteran musicos
have picked up on my invitation to have a taxco renaissance
they are preparing to record 15 songs composed by Raful Krayem.
Raful Krayem was born in Taxco in 1909, just before the Mexican Revolution.
He died in 1939 of the effects of carousing,
author of the most beautiful songs of love
Anyway these old guys have already recorded seven songs of Raful.
These were recorded in a studio in Mexico City 5 years ago
which charged them at that time 50 hours for $2500usd.
They are preparing to record here in Taxco next week if possible
in a makeshift studio using the resources available.
So we are getting together the software, cables etc:
actually we are still trying to learn all about it fast
It is a wonderful project these songs of Raful Krayem
are precious jewels
and they were in danger of being lost
until

"Adios Mi Juventud" these veteran taxco musicos recorded about
five years ago. they are all kindergarted teachers and poor.
When i say these guys are poor. i mean the barest necessities
....kindergarten teachers are paid very little in Guerrero,
which is the second poorest state of the 36 states of Mexico.
These guys got so jazzed when i looked them up and told them
the cooperativa wanted to ask them to help out with a movie
about a poor mexican girl who fell in love with a bullrider.
day before yesterday tomas beltran called me and said they
were going to record nes 15 Raful Krayem songs. These songs
there exists NOT modern recording! naturally we are trying to
facilitate that the recording turn out well, acknowledging
that, for the most part, these old guys know more than us.

The Raful Krayem music is truly beautiful because it is sincere.
It is a form of classical music, becuase each song has integrity.
All the parts of verses, melody, ryhthm, inflection are in relation
to the unity of the piece, and the idea it is designed to express.
These songs are classical in the sense each song expresses an idea.
What is an idea? An idea is NOT a sound. An idea is NOT a feeling.
What is an idea? because having an idea is what makes art classical.
"Adios Mi Juventud" has a classical structure i.e. an idea that every part is lawfully subject to.
Listen again.

This is a classical Mexican music form;
with its roots in the regional folksong.

now, listen to this song - Camioncito Flecha Roja (Little Red Arrow Bus)
http://www.artcamp.com.mx/Musica/Cuerdas/Krayem/03_camioncito_flecha_roja.htm
The idea that guides the composition of the song
commands every detail of the expression of music.
Here the artist portrays a provincial whose girlfriend
is being taken away on a bus (at that time there was only a
single bus each day, connecting Taxco to Mexico or Acapulco)
Since the song is classical, since the song is an idea,
a fine network of ironies is set up by the composer
and the musician performers; all the elements come together
in this classic piece that may live forever - "Camioncito Flecha Roja"

The anguish and trepidiation of the campesino as his village
sweetheart in the grip of the new transportation technology.
The suspicious admonitions he casts at the bus driver carrying
away the one to whom his heart cries, asking if she will remember
the words of love he had secreted in her heart... the emotion
of sentimental love, the perilious feeling that it may be lost...
How well this song is designed to express the composer's idea!

listen again dont be deceived by simplicity - it is simple
becasue every part is in its place, and there is no need
for any other part, and every part is required to realize this art product

some people think classical music is violins. some people
think classical music is "relaxing". some people dont have
the faintest idea what is classical music, having lived
their entire lives in the modern post-industrial mileau.
First of all, classical music is NOT a sound or a style.
It is not the sound that makes classical music classical.
Classical music is not a style of music some may prefer.
Classical music is guided by idea not merely by sensation.
some people think the music is in the notes and if one
hears the notes, one hears the music and thats what music is
all about and these people do not comprehend classical music
Classica music is not the notes, not the sound.
Classical music is what is between the notes or around them.
What is between the notes or around them is an idea.
An idea whose expression, as with all ideas, is via metaphor.
The sound of the notes is only the way the fine substance of idea
can come into the common ground where humanity can experience
powerful feelings of agapic love and emotion in response to beauty.

In the songs of Raful Krayem, we have classical Mexican music.
a delightfully simple popular expression of the common people
a deceptively simple, down-to-earth shubert-like leider-song.

It is hard to overstate the importance of this music,
becasue, it is not only the seed crystal of future
expressions of Mexican popular classical music;
yet, the simplicity and grace and artistic sincerity
of these unique recordings that have come down to us,
serve, as well, as models of how our movie ahould be made.
