on|action :: small ways to maximize your organizing effort on o.net
Welcome to the Omidyar Network Action (on|action) workspace. on|action is a simple little toolbar that you can add to any post to help garner community-wide support and visibility. If you end up using this tool, encourage innovation on o.net by giving this workspace some points!
When complete, your on|action toolbar should look like this:
on|action :: [ bookmark ] [ syndicate ] [ promote ] [ email ] [ invite ] [ donate ] + [what is on|action?]
on|action is comprised of 6 basic "actions" and the "what is this" link that will bring you here:
- [ bookmark ]: Adds your discussion to a user's "watchlist" when 'clicked.' the watchlist item will be bold when there is unread content.
- [ syndicate ]: A link to the discussion's comment rss feed.
- [ promote ]: A link to give positive feedback to the discussion, which can help to raise its visibility in the O.net community.
- [ email ]: Send an external email to a friend with a link to the discussion.
- [ invite ]: Send a batch invitation to a list of people you think would be interested in the discussion group [note: you must be a member of a group to invite others in]
- [ donate ]: A link to a dropcash campaign, a simple way to raise small amounts of cash support for your effort. requires a paypal account.
To make each of these items work, you must create the appropriate links using reStructured text's simple link directives. Here's a quick "How To" guide:
1 - Create the tool bar in your post by typing (or copy/paste from an existing toolbar) out each 'button', and make them links by enclosing the text in a ` followed by an underscore (shift-dash) like this _
2 - At the bottom of your post, create a directive for each link
3 - Open O.net in a second browser window
4 - Navigate to the page on which you want to add the tool bar and find the appropriate link for each button of the toolbar.
5 - Paste the url after each directive
6 - To get the nice line beneath or above your toolbar buttons, just add a series of dashes one line beneath your button text.
7 - Save the page!
Do you have other ideas for "quick actions" people can take on O.net to augment their organizing capacity? Feel free to add your suggestions here.
