We're committed to being in Los Angeles the third weekend of May, but since this is a Thursday I'll see what options exist for making a trip up north for a few days. Either way, we'll definitely help you spread the word on this event! See you soon in LA SBS! ---- :Author: Mark Grimes :Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 11:09:54 PDT Yes Tony, I'd definitely be a part of the Host Committee and get people invited. We'll see about making the trip down, that is much more up in the air. Side note: Kick some major ass Wednesday as opening keynote for the SE Alliance conference. You are going to do a great job there, of that I am *certain*. ---- :Author: Lars Hasselblad Torres :Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 11:22:32 PDT put me down. ---- :Author: Cynthia Gentry (CCAL30) :Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 11:24:40 PDT Tony, you are such an inspiration! and I LOVE the book. The kids are fascinated by it. It's a reeeally long shot that we'll be able to make the cross-continental trip next month, but I'll see if we have any frequent flyer points hidden in a drawer somewhere. Would love to help in any way I can. You're awesome. Thanks for all you do. ---- :Author: Cynthia Gentry (CCAL30) :Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 11:27:27 PDT Put me down, too! Not like you would with an old horse, though. If I can be an absentee hostess I'd be delighted. Will buy some tickets and pass the invitation to those few people I know in SF who are not O.netters. ---- :Author: Michele -> kids+art+charity (CCAL30) :Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 12:20:17 PDT Tony - I would be honored to be a part of your host committee and support you in any way that I can....from NJ! Finally I saw your book in Canton!! I'll get going on getting the word out, and while unlikely that I can make it in person as of the schedule today...things are always changing. :) ---- :Author: Susan Megy (CCAL30) :Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 16:31:55 PDT Count me in, Tony. I will be happy to spread the word out even though I will not be able to make it there. My daughter will be graduating college that weekend. I will check with family and friends who live out there as well. ---- :Author: Julie Caldwell (CCAL30) :Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 13:41:46 PDT :Modified: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 13:42:54 PDT Thanks for the invite Tony. I'm in Hawaii right now on vacation with Dave (10 year anniversary). Will look into this more when I return. I don't know too many people south of the border but will pass on to the few contacts I do have. Would like to be there in person to support but that's just not possible right now. Wishing you the best in all your endeavors. ---- :Author: Greg Murray (CCAL30) :Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2007 02:39:54 PDT Thanks for the invite Tony, would LOVE to be able to fly down for the event, but am under the hammer at the moment and will be stuck in the desert for a while. ---- :Author: Evonne Heyning (CCAL30) :Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2007 11:39:41 PDT Tony, can't wait to see your booksigning tonight here in LA! Congrats on a great UTNE article too, love the photo and story..... ---- :Author: Tony Deifell - how do you see the world? (CCAL30) :Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2007 03:50:38 PDT Hey everyone! Just back from LA where I saw Evonne. Michael O'Keefe had a big book party at his house... had over 100 people in the course of the evening. So fun to see Evonne and Brent. I've added folks to the host committee who agreed to have their names listed. I'll send something out soon that can be easily emailed to folks, but go ahead and tell people on o.net to come to this thread if you want. What are folks interested/willing to do to get the word out? Again, while we have an o.net host committee, we can recruit friends and others beyond o.net (may even be a great way to get some new people involved). Thank you all! ---- :Author: Evonne Heyning (CCAL30) :Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2007 20:41:36 PDT Tony, I want to make sure that your invite gets to the Burning Man teams and our extended San Francisco networks of artists and creatives. Can you send us more details prior to May 3rd? We have ~100 people on our mailing list in the bay area, so I'll send them a special invitation to join you for the event. ---- :Author: Jean Russell (CCAL30) :Date: Tue, 01 May 2007 11:18:16 PDT Tony, of course I would love to support this from afar. I will let everyone I know in the Bay Area know about it. ---- :Author: Tony Deifell - how do you see the world? (CCAL30) :Date: Tue, 01 May 2007 23:17:29 PDT That's awesome, Evonne & Jean! Thanks. Evonne, here is some text to copy for burning man type lists... I'd suggest leaving the 5:30pm stuff off, since it will be a more arts crowd. I can also post some info on community message boards in my neighborhood. Is there any other omidyar.net community outreach that needs to be done? --Erin ---- :Author: Tony Deifell - how do you see the world? (CCAL30) :Date: Sat, 05 May 2007 13:29:26 PDT Erin, great ideas! The idea is to have both Omidyar.net members, and a broader group of "friends of Omindyar.net members" Also, I agree that it would be worth having more deliberate omidyar.net community outreach. What do you think would work best? Is there away to find & PM everyone on O.net who is in the Bay Area? Any other ideas that anyone on the host committee (or others) have? Thanks! ---- :Author: Tony Deifell - how do you see the world? (CCAL30) :Date: Sat, 05 May 2007 13:30:26 PDT Just found someone who may do a big tactile collage... where people participate putting scraps of fabric and other things on a collage (using only their sense of touch). Fun. Anyone want to volunteer a little bit on an art project like this (or other one)? Just let me know. It will be a fun way to engage during the evening! ---- :Author: Erin Mohr :Date: Tue, 08 May 2007 14:31:37 PDT Hi Tony, Just wanted to let you know that I've sent PMs to omidyar.net members within a 40 mile radius of San Francisco inviting them to attend the salon. :) Hopefully we'll start to see some of them buying tickets! See you next Thursday, Erin ---- :Author: Susan Megy (CCAL30) :Date: Wed, 09 May 2007 13:41:44 PDT I pinged my contacts here as well - those who are not Onet members. (CCAL30) :Date: Fri, 25 May 2007 17:41:45 PDT ========= Thank you ========= I have such deep gratitude to the O.net Members Community and all the great O.net co-hosts (Gina Del Vecchio, Jim Fruchterman, Cynthia Gentry, Mark Grimes, Evonne Heyning, Niny Khor, Thomas Kriese, Susan Megy, Erin Mohr, Michele Lifshen Reing, Dani Reif, Jean Russell, Lars Hasselblad Torres) for helping pull off such a marvelous event last Thursday! **We had a door count of 452 people.** **Incredible group of people.** **Incredible fun.** *photos by Leslie Keough* |crowd| |RM| <-Reba & Merlett Reba & Merlett were two of the visually-impaired photographers in the book came from NC... their first time on a plane! |glasses| |hoop| We had lots of interactive art and participatory activities. Above is **"Distortion Hoop"** from Exploratorium, and a guy with the distortion glasses on. You'd shoot the tiny basketball with the glasses on. While you aimed at the basket, it would go far to the left. After 10 times doing it, your mind adjusts for the distortion and you can make the basket. But, when you take off the glasses and take a shot, the ball goes way to the right (until you mind re-adjusts back). This shows how important our mind is for how we see. |tactile| |challenge| Artist, Aondrea Maynard, led a group in a **"Tactile Collage,"** where you only could use your sense of touch to contribute to the collaborative piece of art. SFZero.org produced the **"Seeing Beyond Sight Photography Challenge,"** where you blindfolded yourself and took pictures using all of your senses - except your eyes. We projected them on the wall behind the bar. We also had a "Retinal Burn," "Lego Building," "Seeing With Your Ears," and more!!
