Seeing Beyond Sight: Photographs by Blind Teenagers: Photography helped some students see better

Several students could, in fact, literally see the world better by taking pictures. Even though some students were partially sighted, they often struggled to see the three-dimensional world because of focusing problems, tunnel vision, and other challenges. Two-dimensional photographs capture a broad view of a scene in one, small place. Students could hold these images close to their eyes, magnify them, or hold them in the best light. At the same time, photographs provide both a wide perspective and detail. As George Covington, a well-known photographer who was born legally blind, puts it, “Most people see to photograph; I photograph to see.”
