What does the Board do?

A:The board's first order of business is to select a chairperson. The board will then start making decisions that will include where to move (selecting a new name, choosing a platform, acquiring hosting, etc.), where the omidyar.net home page will direct visitors once the content is archived on September 7, 2007, among other things. Here is more about the Board Role.

(from the transition index page)

What still needs to get done?

Thanks for keeping me/us informed.

:)

Hmm -- but you do suggest that we take the time to write a book?

Not a book, no. A paragraph. Norbert, what will be contentious about this get for you?

I don't understand you (grammatically) -- but I agree with David: if you want to write a short history of omidyar.net, then I'm totally OK with that.

What I am more concerned about is whether this would sidetrack the board from the tasks the board is supposed to perform. It seems to me like we've reached halftime -- but I don't see that the board has gotten very far WRT any of the tasks it was supposed to do. (see the link at the top of this thread)

Norbert, what would you like to see more of?

As far as I can tell, the board is basically done. They got o/net to stay linkable for another year, an eternity in cyberspace. They told everyone to go set themselves up on 8 or 9 other online communities, and they are asking everyone to let them know if anyone finds any other interesting destinations.

What else is there to do?

David,

it's not me -- it's what Omidyar Network expects

So the board is supposed to figure out:

  1. how to consider community input in decision-making processes

I think their answer is to post questions in whatever threads are active, and listen to the response of the active people. They have also sent out group PMs.

2. how to identify groups within omidyar.net that will become new communities or join existing ones elsewhere where to move (selecting a new name, choosing a platform, acquiring hosting, etc.)

I think their answer to this was let the groups decide for themselves. Most board members have contributed to the "platforms" threads.

  1. how to pay for the costs of running new communities (if there are any)

I think the answer is everyone pays their own costs.

  1. where the omidyar.net home page will direct visitors once the content is archived on September 7, 2007.

Their answer to this is the 8 or 9 online communities in the list of "where we're going". This list might change, if anyone comes up with anything new.

Thanks, David, for your gut feeling on this. My gut feeling is quite similar to yours. Happily, John Powers also motivated me to do some more thinking about some of the projects that I have been involved with at omidyar.net (and/or similar future projects). Acordingly, I have added http://groups.cx to the list (and will follow up with a discussion area for that shortly).

I find that workspace rather difficult to understand, and so I asked about it and Haney requested that I pose my questions outside of the workspace. These can be found at "Questions about the "Where We're Going" Workspace".

Thank you very much Dav. Yes, I would have to agree with you that this is what the board seems to be working from. I propose on the next week's agenda that we consider whether our work is complete. I believe we are also responsible for conveying to the staff the interests and strong and collective desires of the group. Are there remaining statements members want conveyed to staff?

I think there is a strong desire on the part of every o/net member that Pierre make a public statement about what worked about this place, what didn't work, what he had hoped it would become, and what advice he would offer someone who might want to create an online community like this.

I agree with Dave..... Closure.

Dav, I have no interest in hearing Pierre's statement. It is so much more valuable to me to listen to your statement or CM's statement or Maranda's statement.

Yes, I am grateful that this place was birthed into being. Yes, I am grateful that certain moneys have oiled the gears here and specifically in several projects that I believe in. But I don't feel most of my experience here has much to do with Pierre.

So, there may be a strong desire on the part of SOME onet members that Pierre make a public statement....AND I am willing to discuss and promote that on the board. I myself feel I am the counter example to your statment.

OK, but I bet you are in the minority there (certainly among the 19,000 users, and among the 200 active ones, and I bet among the few dozens that you still might actually be able to poll).

Anyway, I appreciate your passing this request along. :)

I am fine being in the minuscule minority on that one, Dav, and happy to put your request and the implicit support (nmw) of it before the board and the staff members that attend the transition board call.

Are you mad at Pierre, Jean?

I noticed you are getting along better with Harry. Maybe that's the problem... :)

I am not at all mad at Pierre...I think I get frustrated with people putting so much on some stranger.

Harry? Problem? Huh? I have no idea what you are talking about? ;-)

isn't that question kind of out of line?

I swear to God (and I do sort of believe in him:), I've never even discussed anything with Jean, concerning Pierre, or about her role as a board member. And if you ask anyone else here -- I've never put political "friendship" pressure on anyone here -- ask anyone here: it has never been my style to to either dump negative points, or "gently" twist arms.

Yes: i have discussed my feelings, in private about o/net -- but I bet that my PM v.s. Public dialog is exceedingly small -- i.e. what i say in private differs little from what I would be willing to say in public -- but i have never betrayed a personal confidence -- and i'm not about to do so now :)

--- and, before I forget: would Thomas be willing to disclose the o/net policy on private PMs ? Or were these discussions -- fair-game -- in their marketing studies -- as is the case, whenever you sit down, before your workstation -- in fortune 500, corporate America ?

i.e. in the legalese agreement that we glossed over, but never really studied: were they granted this voyeuristic option -- to delve into our "personal lives" here???

---

This is a simple yes/no question Thomas-the-tailor (i.e. Pierre :)

---

But, with that being said Dav: I have some serious problems with your argument, Dav, and let's hope that your wife -- assuming that she is has such instincts -- is not looking over your shoulder :)

is your argument so shallow, and your personal agenda -- so clear to my eyes :)

that you have to attack my friends ???

and this applies also to Thomas -- who -- when the "Elegant Solution" of the point system -- didn't worked as planned -- then he encouraged others -- to attack my friends :)

And even Jean tried this strategy -- when she went after Brad -- and she really -- imho -- still owes him an apology :)

But where does that leave you Dav?

Are you just jealous Dav -- of what i might have captured -- simply by superior, mythical, imagination :)

Another thing:

Who's in Charge?

Why isn't the Questions about the "Where We're Going" Workspace listed on the FAQ page? It appears this page (the transition group's index page) has been locked.

This whole "event" is becoming curioser and curioser... -- but maybe someone will WIN the big $10K jackpot (?!?)

;D nmw
