I wanted to provide more detailed information about what you'll be able to do on omidyar.net when it is archived on Friday September 7. This list includes the general information from my earlier post so it will all be in one place.

Make sure you do not wait until September 7 to make any changes, as we'll be taking the site off-line the morning (Pacific Time) of Sept 7 for a short time to remove the functionality. Best to get your work done no later than midnight Pacific time September 6, 2007.

Beginning September 7, you'll still be able to:

  • view workspaces, discussions, personal news, and profiles
  • sign in
  • go to Profile and download personal archives
  • go to any public group and view content or download archive
  • edit "About Me" section of your profile
  • use Search
  • use "My omidyar.net" as before
  • change or request a new password
  • view PM's already in your inbox until they expire after 30 days

Beginning September 7, you WON'T be able to:

  • start, edit, delete or fold: discussions, comments, personal news, workspaces or groups
  • edit any other profile information such as Personal links or location - except for the "About Me" section
  • send, reply to or delete PMs
  • apply or edit tags - but tag clouds will remain on the site
  • give feedback to anything - decay of feedback points and accumulation of feedback points via "karma" will cease
  • receive RSS feeds
  • change the status of your content under Creative Commons license - the CCAL30 status on your profile

Interface changes - the following will be removed:

  • "What's New" tab
  • "Most Active" people list
  • "Most Active" groups
  • "Who's Online"

I've been thinking of how I'll keep track of changes to profiles after September 7 when we lose the ability to update the Where We're Going page.

Since folks can continue to update the "About Me" section of their profile, I've been experimenting with ways to easily get to folks' profile pages, and I'm sharing the results with you in case you'd find any of this valuable in your own ventures:

  • Because of the way I've used the feedback system here on omidyar.net (giving positive feedback to the people I'm interested in and want to spend more time with), the list of feedback recipients shown in the my omidyar.net section (see: http://www.omidyar.net/my/feedba ck/) is a great resource for the future.
On my feedback recipients list, I've got a remarkably good lineup of folks that have, at one time or another, done something that warranted my attention enough to give them positive feedback. The more feedback I've given them, the higher they appear on my list, so it's already in priority order.
  • On the other hand, I can also look at the list of folks who've given me positive feedback (the link is on each of our profile pages) for another list of links to folks' profiles. While there's some overlap between the feedback recipients and the feedback givers, there's also a bit of diversity there.
  • Finally, there's a long list of folks on the CCAL30 licensed list in the People section (see: http://www.omidyar.net/user/lice nsed/) that make it easy to link to profiles to catch up where people may have gone. The names are in alphabetical order, so it's more of a laundry list than anything else.

Have others done any thinking about how they'll use omidyar.net after September 7? Please share your tips and tricks here.

One tool it would have been interesting to have would be a private contact list, I mean a page where for instance we could have noted who "T" was (someone we engaged in lots of discussions with and then he changed his username, which changes it everywhere).
