Background - Why is this board being selected?

The board will make the decisions related to how and where omidyar.net community members will continue their good work after omidyar.net is archived. Responses to five questions

Nominees: feel free to fill in and edit but please keep it to 30 words or less. Haney has taken the liberty of abbreviating some of your original responses.

Board Nominees
Nominee Why you? What's the perspective you'd bring to the board? How will you seek input to make decisions? Should we move as a whole or as multiple sub-communities? What platform(s) do you recommend people use? How should future communities should be governed?
TedErnst - withdrawn
nmw ...I've been around the block a couple times. I understand many cultures, many approaches to information, many thinking caps. So I try to get myself "inside" many thinking caps.... By asking and listening -- or by listening and asking (whichever comes first ...it's more difficult to move an entire community -- but the added bonus is having the opportunity for a more multi-faceted community (more opportunities for cross-pollination) ...I would say upwards scalable, and at least WYSIWYG (since people don't like the other stuff) -- but I have almost no ideas about the repercussions of such a choice... Not on precisely how, but if they are not governed, then there is nothing really holding them together (in that case they would simply be independent communities)....
ZebAnderson ...I am a 21 year old college kid who I think has an alright grasp of some current web trends, in terms of what is popular and what works in terms of directing community and driving traffic to websites.... I would make sure all the voices which would like to be heard are. Beyond that are democratically added to the discussion of the migration.... I personally would like the group to move as a whole just because I think there is so much cool synergy... But, if it is the wish of smaller groups to split off... ...I like the framework which the open-source content management system Drupal provides. It can be highly scalable to both smaller website needs and for much larger websites as well.... ...I think that the future of the internet is community driven content with community-governance. Digg is a great example of this....
RicHARDMakepeace I bring inclusion, cooperation and consensus...I am someone who regularly works with convicts and troubled adolescents to train Others about compassion, cooperation and consensus... I do have the ability to listen and to translate what I heard into human terms. I am very good at interpreting, presenting, and re-presenting, the side of technology that revolves around human discussion and disagreement.     One Human Family, One Peaceful Planet.
Mark_Grimes Old-timer I guess, somewhat reasonably balanced demeanor. Bringing a perspective that would try to make as many members happy with the transition as possible. However people wants to provide input is fine, preferably in a thread where anyone can see it and everyone participate. Seems the community would more than likely move into multiple sub-communities. AboutUs, Facebook, WiserEarth (or others) if people want to step into an already existing community. Joomla, Drupal, Omidyar.net source code (or others) if people want to build their own community from the ground up. In short, that decision will be up to each new community. And the stakeholders would be the first ones to set any governance issues.
Nominee Why you? What's the perspective you'd bring to the board? How will you seek input to make decisions? Should we move as a whole or as multiple sub-communities? What platform(s) do you recommend people use? How should future communities should be governed?
AnneMarieBellavance ...since October 2004 I feel I have managed to stay aware of much of the action happening here. I care about the members who are hoping to continue making good things happen... Asking for input using tools such as polls and discussions as well as using tools such as popular and groups to determine where to begin seeking further input I anticipate multiple sub-communities may better accommodate member preferences depends on community interest and poll results. Just a hope the resulting future communities would be centered on user generated content and online collaboration offering participation tools to all members
LindaNowakowski Of the people who have stepped forward so far, there is not a representative from the developing world. I think that I can offer the perspective of having experienced both sides. I have already set up a poll and workspace trying to determine the most critical features that members think will be required for groups. I have a discussion on FaceBook as well... Ideally I would want to move the community intact... this community benefits from its diversity. But, if the group splits, which I think is likely, I think that all of the sub-groups will need to address how to cross-pollinate. Given the time frame we have to work in, I think that the onet platform will work the best for those groups that have centered their activity in this space.... ... open, transparent democratic governance. That does not, in my mind, mean rule of the masses but rather perhaps some kind of representative governance....
David_Bale I'd try to bring an international perspective - one where the contribution of members from all over the world are valued equally and full recognition given to the impact of financial, technological and connectivity problems experienced by any member... I liked the approach adopted by the Town hall meetings. I would like to see the regular use of consensus polling in collaborative ventures such as this Transition process That should be for the community to decide. By electing a board to make the actual decisions about this, this should not mean that there should be no more community input into the process.... I have no particular expertise in this area, but I would not wish to recommend systems whose merits or failings cannot be clearly explained in layman's terms Democratic, accountable, open, transparent, considerate, polite, inclusive and accessible: these are the qualities I would like to see exemplified by our governance in future.
Nominee Why you? What's the perspective you'd bring to the board? How will you seek input to make decisions? Should we move as a whole or as multiple sub-communities? What platform(s) do you recommend people use? How should future communities should be governed?
BrianLewis I have been an active member, and I like to think "responsible citizen" of what is called the O-net community... ..I believe it important to be able to listen and consider with respect the opinions of others while also having a value system that does not allow compromise that would be against the goals of what is agreed... I believe that this is one of the most profound questions which requires address and careful consideration.... ...Honest, Intregity, Respect, Dignity, Compassion, Morality, Openness, Challenge, Goal Agreement, Responsibility, and a Willingness to Give Space to Others to Accomplish What is Needed. I believe that "future communities" should be governed by the same types of principles which I have just outlined above.
DavidFrayne - withdrawn       wiserearth is cool!
Meron_Moroz I have been a member of O'net since the fall of 2004 and since that time have actively participated in a number of initiatives and supported other O'net members with their projects. By asking questions and listening. But more so, by being asked probing and thought provoking questions so that I can discover my own position... I suspect there will be movement towards multiple sub-communities to meet the technical and focus needs of this diverse community. ...Taking in to consideration the technical challenges of connecting for members in the developing world I'd like to see a space that minimizes those challenges, yet provides the tools necessary to share information... As openly as possible.
Nominee Why you? What's the perspective you'd bring to the board? How will you seek input to make decisions? Should we move as a whole or as multiple sub-communities? What platform(s) do you recommend people use? How should future communities should be governed?
christinajordan Africa still thinking about that multiple subcommunities myC4.com, aboutus.org, still thinking on others... Many views but no coherent thoughts right now to share.
Jean_Russell There are so many different groups on Onet, and I have crossed into many of them. I have studied how community thrives and what works...I also feel very connected to many members who don't fit neatly within one group or another, and I believe they too deserve representation... I will listen to the council I am given and consider it within the context of the many different areas and interests of onet members. I have no formal process. People who vote for me will need to trust my diplomacy and good intentions. If we can move as a whole to help give us more time for transition, I support that. But eventually I see us collectively or individually moving into smaller communities. Where will depend very much on the wants and needs of the groups. I have been looking around at options for months. I plan to use o.wagn.org for my content and anyone who wants to collaborate with me there. For other groups I recommend Wagn, AboutUs, Wiki, Ning, Facebook, and other created or evolving options. Each community must govern itself. One of the gifts of the break-up is allowing for that self-governance to emerge addressing the specific needs of each community.

Nomination process

UPDATE: the nominations are closed - this is left to document the process.

  • You must nominate yourself to be considered. (NOTE: Any omidyar.net member is eligible to run for the board.)
  • Nominate yourself by creating your own self-named workspace in the Transition group and link to it - and to your profile - in the table below. This workspace is where you can help people understand why they should vote for you. Some of the issues you may want to address on your page include:
  • Why you? What's the perspective you'd bring to the board?
  • How will you seek input from the rest of the community to make decisions?
  • Should the current community move as a whole or as multiple sub-communities?
  • What platform(s) do you recommend people use?
  • Do you have views on how future communities should be governed?
  • Nominations must be made by midnight (Pacific time) on July 31st.
  • Please contribute to a supportive process and help make sure any criticism is constructive.

Voting process

UPDATE: the voting is closed - this is left to document the process.

  • Who can vote for the board? To vote for the members of the board, a member must meet the following eligibility qualifications as of July 15, 2007:

    • added a name (real or pseudonym) to their profile page
    • been a member of omidyar.net for six months
    • signed on in the last sixty (60) days.

The list of eligible voters has been posted, and everyone who is a member of this group meets the eligibility requirements.

Keep in mind: any omidyar.net member (whether eligible to vote or not) can contribute to the Transition discussions.

  • A poll with the names of all the nominees will open in the Transition group at about 9 am on Friday, August 3 and close at the same time on Tuesday, August 7. Eligible voters are automatically members of the Transition group and the poll will be set so only those members can vote.

  • Voters can select up to five nominees. The names of the voters will be exposed after the vote, but the way they voted will remain hidden. In case of a tie, the member who joined earlier will be selected.
