Background
Because you own your own words here on omidyar.net, we want to make it easy for you to grab all the content you've authored here on omidyar.net in one file at one time. To make it easier to continue the good works at omidyar.net, we're also providing the ability for any member to download all the contents of any public group, too. These archives will be accessible until 12/31/2007, and they are only available to signed-in members.
How to download content
Click on the tab called “get archive” which appears in all groups as well as your member profile. Follow the instructions to grab a copy of the related content.
- To download your personal content, go to your profile by clicking on your name near the top right of the page. Click on the tab called "get my archive" on the right. Then click on the link "Download My Content".
- To download a group's content, go to any page in the group and click on the brown "Get Archive" tab (on the righthand side). Then click on the links to download. You can choose whether or not to include the files of the group.
Content will be downloaded as text (utf-8) archive zip-files.
Personal Content Archives
Your personal content includes:
- all discussions you started
- all comments you have made separated into two folders:
- the folder "your_words_discussions" contains only comments that you have made.
- the folder "all_words_discussions" includes the entire context - your comments plus comments by others.
- latest versions of all workspaces you have ever edited
- results of all polls you have voted in
- your personal news and all comments made on those news items
Group Content Archives
The group content includes:
- the group's about page (all the content but no feedback scores)
- all discussions
- all workspaces
- polls (just the aggregate results page, no "who voted" info)
- files (made available only as a separate checkbox with warning of total size of all files to be downloaded)
Which version to download
Most people will want to download the lastest version captured after the site was archived on September 7. Earlier versions will include the content at that particular point in time.
- Check here for What's OK to republish.
- You also have a choice to include files that were uploaded to a group's filespace.
Troubleshooting problems
- if you are having problems unzipping the file, you can try downloading the following zip utilities: 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org) or winzip (http://www.winzip.com)
- If you've changed your profile name in the past month, you might have a problem downloading. Try changing it back to what it was earlier.
- For Windows users, you may find it easier to view your files using the application Wordpad that comes with Windows instead of Notepad. Wordpad displays the spaces and carriage returns of the files better.
- Here's a another site listing some free programs to unzip the downloaded file.
