Background - Why is this board being selected?

The board will make the decisions related to how and where omidyar.net community members will continue their good work after omidyar.net is archived. Omidyar Network will work with the members of the board to help with matters related to this community transition. Here's more information about the Board Role.

Nomination process

  • You must nominate yourself to be considered. (NOTE: Any omidyar.net member is eligible to run for the board.)
  • Nominate yourself by creating your own self-named workspace in the Transition group and link to it - and to your profile - in the table below. This workspace is where you can help people understand why they should vote for you. Some of the issues you may want to address on your page include:
  • Why you? What's the perspective you'd bring to the board?
  • How will you seek input from the rest of the community to make decisions?
  • Should the current community move as a whole or as multiple sub-communities?
  • What platform(s) do you recommend people use?
  • Do you have views on how future communities should be governed?
  • Nominations must be made by midnight (Pacific time) on July 31st.
  • Please contribute to a supportive process and help make sure any criticism is constructive.

Statement of Interest:

I am interested in honoring the relationships and communities that have been such a deep and rich part of my life for so many wonderful uplifting years. I understand completely the process we are about to embark upon, especially in light of my watching so many other processes here. Of all the things we have done, this one matters to me most, as this community has been more important to me than any particular action we take. I am eager to see us all evolve. I am eager to see communities flourish. And I am willing to participate and collaborate as the process requires to increase the integrity around this transition and cooperation around the evolution to the best of my ability.

Comments:

  • Why you? What's the perspective you'd bring to the board?
  • There are so many different groups on Onet, and I have crossed into many of them. I have studied how community thrives and what works. I have made it a personal mission to connect with via face to face or other means with the wide range of people here. Also, I span an interest in both Food Chain and EFN, both work on Genocide and Appreciation, both Uplift Academy and Catalytic Communities, Peace Tiles, Amoration, Seeing Beyond Sight, and other artists. While some of my personal and philanthropic work involves Africa, I have not been active in that area, so I leave it to others to represent those specific and important concerns. I also feel very connected to many members who don't fit neatly within one group or another, and I believe they too deserve representation. I am not divisive. I will stand my ground and speak my opinion honestly, and I am open to negotiation and always hold the common interest as the highest priority. I am not tied to being right nor driven by ego.
  • How will you seek input from the rest of the community to make decisions?
  • I will listen to the council I am given and consider it within the context of the many different areas and interests of onet members. I have no formal process. People who vote for me will need to trust my diplomacy and good intentions.
  • Should the current community move as a whole or as multiple sub-communities?
  • If we can move as a whole to help give us more time for transition, I support that. But eventually I see us collectively or individually moving into smaller communities.
  • What platform(s) do you recommend people use?
  • Depends very much on the wants and needs of the group. I have been looking around at options for months. I plan to use a wagn for my content and anyone who wants to collaborate with me there. For other groups I recommend Wagn, AboutUs, Wiki, Ning, Facebook, and other created or evolving options.
  • Do you have views on how future communities should be governed?
  • Each community must govern itself. One of the gifts of the break-up is allowing for that self-governance to emerge addressing the specific needs of each community.
