I am the founder and director of Women Organized Against Homelessness (WOAH), a 501(c)3 nonprofit org based in CA. However, I have been living/traveling on the East Coast for 8 years, studying both the Undetectable Homeless population and rural sprawl and its negative effects on small towns, family farms, and the environment. My (UCLA) doctoral dissertation fields were urban&rural (community) planning/ organizational culture and strategy/folkloristics and oral histories. In addition, I have a heavy-duty background in domestic abuse information, assistance to victims, shelter staffing, and am considered to be an activist....
My books include "Domestic Abuse and The Homeless Woman" (U.of MI, 1988), "Shadow Women: Homeless Women's Survival Stories" (Sheed & Ward, 1990) and "Organizational and Community Responses to Domestic Abuse and Homelessness" (Garland, 1994). There are also numerous academic journal articles. I particularly admire an international journal which I feel is extremely important: "Women and Environments" (published out of Toronto.)
I have a plan (Ph.D. dissertation) to alleviate homelessness: recast abandoned towns and dying small towns across the country for new communities by and for "pioneers" which include the homeless. The manner in which people interested in participating will be by national e-communication networking -- a local to national e-bulletin board. The Community Land Trusts will prosper by sweat equity labor; alternative housing (strawbale, rammed earth, ceramic, etc.) that is land-and-weather appropriate; alternative enery, water collection, and wind harnessing; organic farming; small organic edible gardening projects for home use and sales to restaurants and grocery stores; humane animal raising; new business co-ops; fellowship; and continuing e-commerce: self-sufficiency.
The elusive "Undetectable Homeless" (ever increasing) population includes men and women who were once mainstream workers or lifetime homemakers who are now living out of vehicles and boats and mingle invisibly among us -- and could be populating new towns. I can be found by name on Google (but not with all sites) and am also at http://www.studioclub.com on the Home Page with a title of UNDETECTABLE HOMELESS, which is a 5-year ongoing e-doc and e-book.
My own web site: http://www.HousingAndJobAlternat ives.com is "up and running" but somehow some search engines are not finding it. HousingAndJobAlternatives.com seeks to explain the root causes of pre-homelessness and homelessness among longtime workers and homemakers as well as "outing" corruption in local, state, and federal offices which contribute to unnecessary homelessness.
We welcome conversation regarding any new outrages concerning all topics which violate personal/civil rights, collusion among officials which cause deprivation of medical care for those who are already paying for Medicare and a co-insurance policy: i.e., the protection by state Boards of Physicians which encourages physicians to abuse rather than discipline those who assault patients. The "I take no responsibility" excuse by doctors is untenable and is a silent cause of "invisible murder."
I am seeking a publisher for two new books. One is a needed update on "Shadow Women:" and the other pertains to the negative effects of rural sprawl and how to halt further small town/family farm/ecological damage.
