I've read a ton of stuff here since being gone for 6 weeks and it's all swimming in my head! Lots of stuff happening at the Onet community - GREAT stuff! Congratulations everybody on all the movement I see in the big picture!
You are invited here to step back with me and look at this wonderful picture. Help fill in the gaps. Tell about any amazing stuff coming together for you of late, that can help paint a collective picture of where we stand as a community in this battle for making good stuff happen!
Let's make some sense out of this tapestry we are weaving. It's really gorgeous! Like a magic carpet to a new future!
I'll start -
Startdate: 14 September 2005
A group of 20 Life in Africa members will attend a Peace Tiles workshop to kick off a new piece-building push into Northern Uganda. The completed tiles will physically be mounted at the WE Center as a frame around the Peace Tiles mural created by the Omidyar.net community at a conference in Chicago last July.
Each participant will pay shs. 6,500 per tile, which will actually pay for the creation of 2 Peace Tiles. The second tile they buy will be for a Peace Tiles party to be tentatively held on the weekend of October 1-2 at Gusco reception center in Gulu. If all goes according to Life in Africa's plan, the peace tiles made by 20 child soldiers will be auctioned online to start up a community Peace & Reconciliation factory project in Gulu.
The PR Factory's aim is to serve as a community-owned profit-making gathering place for workers, children and parents involved in a range of peace-building and income-generating activities that are designed to promote awareness of Northern Uganda in the world. The factory will work with local athletics based activities to engage the community in producing art, music and craft products packaged to link consumers in other countries with Northern Uganda's stories.
The PR Factory will build on a merger of innovations designed by 2 East African social entrepreneurs from the global Ashoka network of Innovators for the Public. Trevor Dudley brings outstanding programs in athletics, the delivery of community peacebuilding messages and corporate engagement programs from his experience as Founding Commissioner of The Kids League. Christina Kirabo Jordan's Webbed Empowerment (WE) Center concept launched earlier this year bridges the Uganda based Life in Africa Foundation's member activities in peace-building and craftmaking with opportunities available through a growing new online community designed & launched 1 year ago by the legendary founder of eBay, Pierre Omidyar.
The first Peace Tiles made by children in Gulu last July are now underway to Darfur, Sudan with a fellow peacebuilder from the Omidyar community. As the PR Factory in Gulu continues to develop, other members of the Omidyar.net community are developing more social product ideas, developing global franchising concepts and consumer mainstreaming strategies, and hammering out tomorrows shapes in bylaws for governing these new international alliances for profitable peace-building on a global scale.
A conference of Onet community members is tentatively scheduled in Uganda in December. That's a little over 90 days from now, which could potentially serve as an extremely good reason to mount an Onet monitoring and evaluation mission to Uganda.
All I can say to what my mind sees as potential and significance in all of this now is WOW!
Zap quickly to the present:
Please fill me in - what's been happening around here? What are the major developments you see? I would love to understand all the different pieces folks working on to see what can fit together and start to really make happen now. I have more to tell y'all too!
P.S. - It's good to be back. I'll be chiming in on a couple of other threads soon.

So nice to see you back and popping up online. Other than launching the Spread the Good! software and website, I've been spending the bulk of my time on o/net either helping enterprises in lost in the FOOD CHAIN and noodling around with the ned << philanthropic franchise agenda. Also waiting for you to return so we could begin working on the Tiered Micro-Financing Investment (TMFI) program as well.
Looking at some things I have on my watch list you may find interesting:
Well, that's probably more than you needed (it's more than I need ;-), but that's the most recent action oriented stuff I've got my peepers on. Let me know when you want to start hammering out TMFI in a FOOD CHAIN workspace.

From my perspective, a lot has shifted. Julie and I had been working for over a year together on two parallel tracks. One, to replicate the personal/social dynamic of the Humanist Movement, but in words that people in the west could embrace. Two, uplifting a global commons. Since the conference, both have really taken off. /hearts/building a commons and /hearts/Breathing in Breathing out

Christina, it's lovely hearing your voice again. No need for me to point you in more directions -- you've got enough reading as it is. But I am looking forward to sharing your vision and working together this coming year. Your energy is infectious!

Hi Christina! Welcome back! I too have been away in chunks this summer without internet at all. Recently came back esp. reading rose's dealing with katrina chronicles - did you know that o-net is matching donations $1 to $1?
Otherwise, was going to ask you regarding o-net infrastructure: i was noodling around with the idea of a trail map for o-net, and later stumbled onto a discussion where you and julie were discussing the community bulletin board. Any updates on that one?
Thanks to ted, here's the current look of the map-bar:

Hi Christina et al. I've been away for about a month too - getting married. I'll try to post a few photos soon. It was so much fun! (we had a full-out roller disco with everyone roller skating). I’m just now trying to sort through all the stuff that piled up while I was gone.
In the mean time, Mark "the wonderful" Grimes kept the wdydwyd? thread going. Thanks Mark!. And, I see that you put your photo up Christina. Cool!
My O.net highlight from this year so far is the Chicago conference. Such good people there!

kinetic vision and zip-zapping enthusiasm
I feel like a kismet comet lately. Lots of people in my life are infusing me with the energy of their visions.
And what a plan you've got!
Trevor and I are both pretty excited about it. We're meeting with a lawyer on Tuesday to hammer out some bits and pieces. The bracelet contract is also underway with Invisible Children, so we're on our way to formalizing that. Their guy here is very excited about how this works with taking the bracelet production up North.
I am curious to know how Monica fits into the picture?
We're actually planning to open up to identical centers in Kampala and Gulu. The WE Center lease is up at the end of this year, so we need to change location of the Kampala office anyway. This is all welcome news for Monica and any who will be staying in Kampala. We've got two land opportunities in Kampala, both adjacent to International Schools, which brings up all sorts of other potential for the centers.
What kinds of plans do you have for ensuring the longevity of the P&R factory?
Products, Marketing, creative Financing, and setting kids footprints in stone. Stay tuned for details.
The sister of a friend and colleague of mine works in the government's micro-lending and micro-enterprise office -- perhaps you would like an introduction?
If you think she'd like to know more about what we're doing, there will be material you can send to her forthcoming soon.
So wonderful always to see how the peace tiles are being used to stimulate awareness of indivual capacity to build peace while creating opportunities for income generation.
I have more to tell you about Peace Tiles. Check this out!

Also lots of ideas about the income generating piece that I still need to write down.

This is so wonderful to read, thanks Christina (Tony, Ted, and others too!).
Niny, I love the trail map idea and hope you'll continue to make this space easier to navigate for visitors.
We just returned to LA and are focusing on launching MM and Toyshoppe. PeaceTilesLA is happening tomorrow and I've got a new groom by my side to help share the load. I can't believe Tony went for the rollerskating.....I had wanted to do that for my wedding years ago! We're off to the Tennessee woods instead for caving and swimming with the united families next spring.
I second Mark's watchlist and have also been taking folks to http://www.katrinalist.net for the open source Katrina watchspace.

Hi Christina,
Thanks for the update. I second the WOW. Very exciting.
I have actually had less time for Onet, spending more time with my three year old son, finishing a book on working with teens based on work I did with incarcerated youth in NYC, also developing a proposal for a website, WiseTeens.com, to empower teens in making wise life and purchasing decisions.
Trying to get outside and exercise more, play with my dog, enjoy the Fall coming on.
On another note, I am writing the lyrics for my first rap song. Lots of fun.

I've had a bright idea for tagging which should work quite well if people decide to go for it. So far, two "vocabulary sets" are available: interests and skills. I've also set up a couple pages in the jobs group, but that is entirely experimental. The "master list" (tag) is expected to be permanently in flux. ;D
Of course, tagging will only work if people use it -- and perhaps the most momentous insight I have had is that there seems to be more interest in taxonomic approaches (I am less interested in this).

Norbert, might be strange to have this question coming from me, since I've been following your work on tags, but is there a how-to on tagging somewhere?

Good idea, Ted
I'll add something to the vocabulary pages that people can cut/paste tags from.
I would also welcome for someone to write up something, since if I do everything there is probably a high risk of the whole system being about as intelligable as most of my other posts. ;D

There's a new group called Local/Global with a thread that's looking at how to engage 200 Askoha African fellows in replicating with CAT COM. You met Theresa in Chicago. We are having a Next Steps Meeting that you might want to participate in.
Great to have you back at O.net.

Christina, welcome back! Its so great to have your kinetic vision and zip-zapping enthusiasm around here :)
And what a plan you've got! The work with your Ashoka Fellow colleague sounds vital, creating spaces for learning and health while you provide critcal mechanisms for sustainability.

So wonderful always to see how the peace tiles are being used to stimulate awareness of indivual capacity to build peace while creating opportunities for income generation. Wishing you good shoes, a stout stick, and plenty of water on your journey! I look forward to supporting you however i can :)
