Got an email from omidyar.net member BJ Fogg showing off a new widget that his company, YackPack, has created. The widget turns a web page into a live audio talk room (your computer has to have a microphone and speakers to take advantage of the feature).
Using the .. raw:: html directive (indenting any html code by one space so that it gets read as html), you can embed a widget of your own on any omidyar.net workspace page, or at the top of a discussion. If you look at the plaintext version of this post, you can copy and paste the code yourself. Look for the prompts in the plaintext code as to where to start and end the cutting and pasting.
| Disclaimer: | YackPack has received funding from Omidyar Network, but that doesn't make the widget any less cool! |
|---|
If you embed one of these widgets in a page here on omidyar.net, please create a link to it in a comment below so we can try out audio talk rooms.

hmm - interesting! have you thought about trying it out in a more visible "dedicated" o.net page folks can drop in on? might be neat if it was associated with something like an introduce yourself of troubleshooting page...?

Have thought about putting it in a more high-traffic place, yes, by way of sharing the fact it can be done with others. Have only had it here to test it out to see how it works.
Glad you popped it onto the introduce yourself page!

fwiw i used the asynchronous version in the past and couldn't actually find a practical, "sticky" appliction for it... maybe this will be different :)

Thomas,
how does it wok technically -- and might there be "security risks"?

I'm definitely not the technical person on this, Norbert. The folks at YackPack are the wizards behind the scenes.
I admit I've played with the asynchronous version of YackPack in the past and found it interesting (yet superfluous to good-old-posting), but this widget seems to be more in line with adding a value layer to online spaces thanks to the synchronous interaction.
What made it such a great experience for you? (BJ might be interested in hearing your thoughts since he's got a link to this thread already)

- What made it such a great experience...?
Well, the breath mints were a nice touch. For now, let me say it was the novelty of pushing a button and reaching nmw :)

well, it motivated me to try out the 99 cent head-set microphone set I've had lying around for a couple years on the shelf. Lars said I sounded like the tin man (but that's only because I haven't got a heart, really)....

I've put the code on a couple workspaces -- what happens if pages containing the same code are loaded in separate frames and/or browser windows?
here's where I've put it so far:
http://www.omidyar.net/group/nmw /ws/live_audio_conference/
http://www.omidyar.net/group/dia betes/ws/chatten/
I think -- to answer my own question -- having two such pages open at the same time may compromise the stability of the browser application (?)
I'm guessing this would also be the case if a workspace including the code were "on-include"-ed?

Haven't tried having more than one talk room open at a time myself... but what you've posted seems to make sense, Norbert. Kind of like having multiple instances of a streaming media player open at once?

yea -- also: if two people go to different workspaces that use the same code, they would still be connected (i.e. "talking to each other") -- right?

I don't know the answer to that question... maybe experimentation is in order? :^)
